An overbite occurs when the upper set of teeth overlap the lower teeth. If the overlap is small then this is perfectly normal, but when this is exaggerated then it can lead to potentially serious issues.

If your teeth stick out then that’s called an overjet, protrusion, or a horizontal overbite; if they overlap the bottom teeth too much then that’s called a deep bite or a vertical overbite; and some people can have both.

Why do I have an overbite?

The most common cause for an overbite is an inherited hereditary condition, but there are other factors that can be involved including:

  • Thumb sucking when younger
  • Grinding teeth
  • TMJ (Temporomandibular joint dysfunction)
  • Biting nails or chewing on pencils and pens

Orthodontists further classify overbites depending on whether it is caused by your teeth growing in the wrong position – Dental Overbite – or if it’s because your lower jaw is considerably smaller than your upper jaw.

How do you correct an overbite?

Children and Adolescents

As with most medical issues it’s best to start treatment as soon as possible. If the overbite is due to tooth misalignment, then braces can gently encourage realignment as the jaw and teeth are growing, preventing more drastic measures later.

Adults

Whilst it’s best to catch issues as early as possible, it’s never too late to address an overbite. For most cases the use of discreet braces or invisible aligners will gradually move the teeth into the right position. If the overbite is caused by the size or position of the jaw, such as if the lower jaw is considerably smaller than the upper jaw, then surgery will be required.

What now?

Your teeth are just as unique as the rest of you, so there’s never a one-size-fits-all solution; book a no obligation appointment with us so we can look at your overbite and make a recommendation as to your potential treatment options.

We can also take you through the treatment plan step by step so that you know exactly what’s involved, and explain how it will resolve any speech issues, discomfort, problems eating, and just as importantly how it will give you the smile you deserve.
