Orthodontics is a specialised area of dentistry, focused on straightening teeth and fixing jaw problems.

If your teeth or jaws aren’t in the right place, they can cause problems with eating, talking, and even keeping them clean – which in turn can lead to decay and gum disease.
One of the most rewarding parts of the job is seeing a patient finish their treatment and walk out with a smile that they’re truly proud of, more confident, and happier.

How does it work

Each condition and patient is unique, but for the majority of cases we use an appliance – for example braces or clear aligners – to put constant gentle pressure on the teeth, and after a period of time move them into their correct position.

Can I get my teeth straightened at my dentist?

Every orthodontist is a fully qualified dentist, but not every dentist is an orthodontist. You should visit your family dentist regularly so that they can keep an eye out for tooth decay and gum disease, but when it comes to correcting misaligned teeth or issues with your jaws, it’s time to visit your local orthodontist.

Orthodontists initially qualify as dentists, and then go on to study for an additional 3 years which includes 5,000 hours of practical training
